A bill introduced in the legislature last year would have allowed the State of North Carolina to seize and take over land and dams that Alcoa has owned and operated along the Yadkin River for more than 50 years.  While the bill has been defeated for now, the fight is not over.  The state continues to pursue avenues through which it can seize this private company’s property and take over its dams.

Alcoa owns 38,000 acres of land along the Yadkin River.  The company owns the dams it built along the river.  This would be one of the biggest government property grabs in history.

At its heart, this issue is about private property rights.

The bottom line: If the state can seize property owned by a large corporation like Alcoa, how much more vulnerable are private citizens and small business owners like us?
